What's the best auto 4x4?

I am looking for a new/nearly new automatic four-wheel drive car. I have a £7000 part exchange and am expecting to pay £20,000/£25,000. I do 20,000 miles per year with about half that on the continent.

I am retired, so need ultra reliability and being on a limited income I have to find the best compromise between running costs and performance. I have looked at the Kia Sportage/Hyundai ix35 and have heard that a new mid sized Range Rover might be on the way. What would you recommend?

LandRover Discovery Sport on the way to replace Freelander and will have JLR's new Ingenium engines. Meanwhile your best bet is the BMW X3. The 18d is now much improved with more power and torque, but your best bet is the new 20d with 190PS and 400Nm torque.
