How can I reduce tyre noise on my Toyota Avensis?

The tyres on my 2009 Toyota Avensis seem quite noisy (Pirelli 275/55 P17 94), is this a common problem with this model and are there quieter tyres available?

A few people have complained of this on this model of Avensis. You could try Goodyear Excellence. All new tyres now have to be labelled for noise and that makes it easy to chose those that will pick up the least road noise.
