Need a used family car for £8k - any recommendations?

Our 2005 Ford Mondeo Estate has suffered a terminal fault and we need to replace it with used car. We don't necessarily want/need another estate and have been considering the Citroen C4.

Having three kids, one in a baby seat, another in a booster seat and the oldest almost as big as mum, we need something with lots of back seat space. We really want to keep the running costs including fuel economy and annual tax as low as possible (as we will have to finance the replacement) whilst still getting something that's affordable with lots of extras and good spec. Our budget is £8500. What do you suggest?

Honda Civic 1.8iVTEC ES or SE. Almost as economical as a diesel, none of the problem areas of a diesel, reliable chain cam engine and huge interior space.
