Buying a new BMW - manual or auto?

You kindly replied to my question regarding choice of BMW 3 series engines, and recommended the 320d ED. Regarding the transmission type, will the manual box eventually succumb to dual mass fly wheel failure, or will the automatic box be better bet as it will free of any such failures and subsequent repair cost?

The auto is an eight-speed and consequently requires fresh fluid every three years so the cost of that adds up. I'd prefer the manual with this car.
