Power steering fault on an old Meriva

I have a 2003 Vauxhall Meriva and the EPS light is coming on. I would like to repair, but it is too expensive.

As this fault is a safety issue and has been complained about, do Vauxhall have to repair?

The car is 10 years old and the life of the EPAS motor is determined how it is used. If it is held against the lock stops too many times the motor burns out.
