Vauxhall Meriva power steering problem

I've had a Meriva with no problems for a few years, yesterday the power steering went and I can barely move the wheel. I've read its a common fault and that some Vauhall dealers have agreed to fix them free of charge but would I get anywhere by taking it to a Vauxhall dealer as I bought it second hand from an independent garage?
