Buying a nearly new small car - what do you recommend?

I am looking to buy a nearly new car. It will primarily be used for commuting around 16,000 miles/year, mainly on good rural A roads. Ideally, I’d like a diesel that is comfortable, reliable and economical. A small car will suffice since I won't be carrying passengers.
The easy option would be to go for a Ford Fiesta. I gather that it's had some very good reviews, and I’ve been very pleased with my current Ford. What do you think?

Alternatively, I've been considering a MINI Cooper D. Maybe this would give me the economy and reliability that I'm after, but also with a little bit of extra fun and character to ease my daily commute.

A Fiesta 1.6 Econetic will be the most economical. A MINI diesel will be the most fun, but more expensive and less economical. They're all tested at www.honestjohn.co.uk
