I have bought a directional tyre as a spare - is this OK?

I have just purchased a full sized tyre to replace the silly space saver tyre for my Volvo V50.

The wheel and tyre are good but I think I may have made a mistake as I realise the tyre is directional. All is fine in 50% of cases when punctured wheel is in the ‘right direction’ but if a puncture occurs on the ‘wrong direction’ wheel, what are the implications or would I need a symmetrical tyre on the spare be the answer?

My aim was to prevent a puncture far from home late at night/out of hours preventing me from getting all the way home with minimum fuss, and sorting the puncture at a convenient time later.

Often I feel a small fixable puncture is called unrepairable by tyre fitters and I am forced to purchase a new tyre at top rate which I could avoid if I were able to sort it once home and even get a new pair if another tyre is low.

If the car is on standard tyres then a directional spare is no use to you for punctures on one side of the car, unless you go to the trouble of swapping the other wheels around.
