Gearbox failure on Audi TT - who should pay for repairs?

About 18 months ago my Audi TT's gearbox failed. I had an extended warranty policy and they agreed to cover the costs. I was slightly perturbed that they arranged for a reconditioned gearbox to be installed.

After the work I cancelled the policy, but now (18 months later) the gearbox has failed. Should the warranty company pay for the repairs?

The warranty firm is not responsible. A reconditioned part can fail just like an original part can fail. You took a chance on not renewing your policy and came unstuck.
