Why do runflat tyres need to be replaced after deflation?

I do not share your enthusiasm for runflat tyres. I have them on my BMW325i and the ride quality is not good. A leaky valve on one tyre caused a deflation so I ran it just over 30 miles to get home. When examined, so much of the tread was scrubbed away I needed a new tyre at a cost of £120. The tread on the other tyre had several thousand miles left on. An expensive run home.

My enthusiasm comes from being within 6-inch of being hamburgered by an HGV while changing a wheel on the hard shoulder. If I'd been on runflats I would not have had to stop on the hard shoulder at all. I'd rather be alive than have to fork out £120.
