Are run flat tyres worth the extra money?

I'm being put off buying a BMW 3 Series because it has run flat tyres. I understand a punctured run flat is only good for 50 miles at 50 mph and can't be repaired. So what do you do when you're miles from anywhere on a Sunday afternoon. Are mobile fitters good enough to rely on?

They're good for a lot further than 50 miles, but are only repairable if the carcass is not damaged, which it will be if you drive more than 50 miles on it.

Fact is, if you have a puncture on a motorway a runflat may well save your life because if you try to change a tyre on the hard shoulder of a motorway, even with a fully lit police car behind you, there is a high chance of being hamburgered by an HGV. Very nearly happened to me by a distance of about 6-inches.
