Is the new Ford Ka a good car for my grandson to use as his first vehicle?

My grandson will be 18 next March and I would like to be involved in the purchase of a good secondhand vehicle to help him out in his Uni years. He said he would quite like a Ford Ka which has, I understand is a 1250cc engine, low petrol consumption and is not too pricey to insure. Is this true? If he were to have a tracker type device put into the vehicle by an insurance company, would that be an economic thing to do?

A new Ford Ka is basically a Fiat 500 underneath, built in Poland, which are two good things because the 500 is the most reliable car Fiat has ever made. Yes, black box telematics is an excellent idea. It means carrying big brother around in the car all the time, but prevents the sort of testosterone-fuelled stupidity that kills teenagers. Easy to drive and economical. Based on the Fiat 500 but handles much better. More room in rear than 500.
