With what could I replace my unreliable 2003 Renault Megane?

I am currently an extremely frustrated driver of a 53-plate 1.5dci Renault Megane. Over the last three months I have shelled out over £1200 pounds to replace the ECU, front coils and top hats and recently the cam belt (after the fan belt shredded and wrapped itself around the cam belt). This has started me thinking about replacing the temperamental Megane. I have a budget of up to £12,000 (but would prefer to spend less than this) and would like a car of a similar size, a diesel engine (due to high commuting mileage) and something with an ounce of reliability. What would you recommend?

Get rid of it asap - that generation of Megane is known to have many, many problems. Many of those are documented here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/renault/mk_cit-md_64...d

Any of these hatches would make a fine replacement and will suit your needs: www.honestjohn.co.uk/topten/medium-family
