Should learners start on an automatic before progressing to a manual car?

In a discussion on learning to drive, it was suggested that some learner drivers would benefit by having their initial training in an automatic to get them used to dealing with traffic and hazards, before progressing to lessons in a manual car to learn the clutch and gears. Would you be good enough to give us your opinion on this idea?

Dodgy because the only totally safe way to control an automatic is to left foot brake and that will add another confusion to the learner when she gets into a manual. I think better to learn to drive a car properly off public roads before being allowed on them.
