Which automatic car to replace our Volvo S40?

I currently drive a Volvo S40 saloon, now 10 years old and which I have had from new, it being the third Volvo S40 I have owned. I have always been very happy with the vehicles but now, with advancing arthritis, find them a very low drive with quite a hard suspension. I seek an automatic vehicle that has a higher, comfortable driving position, is economical to run and around the same width of my old Volvo because I have an old, narrow garage. I have been attracted to the Kia Sportage but feel it may be too wide. Any ideas? My Volvo just fits in the garage without retracting the wing mirrors and enabling me to get out of the car, but not for the door to be fully opened.
