Why is my friend's Volkswagen Passat opening all its windows when left unattended?

My colleague has just purchased an ex-demonstrator 2012 Volkswagen Passat estate and he has had problems with the windows opening when the vehicle is parked overnight or left unattended. Any ideas?

He's squeezing the key in his pocket. It has an extra function that opens all the windows if you press it again after locking it. Or the driver's door is full of water and moisture has got into the locking ECU in there.
