Why was I pulled over for having no insurance after having taken out a new policy?

I renewed my annual car insurance on 4 January. This was done by phone, paid by debit card and the new certificate arrived by post a few days later. The existing policy was scheduled to terminate ten days later at midnight on 14 January with the new policy starting immediately at midnight. I was therefore surprised to be stopped by a police car on 15 January and accused of driving without insurance. Their computer had apparently shown me as 'not insured'. After twenty minutes of explanation, interrogation and phone calls, they finally conceded that everything was in order and I was allowed to proceed. From now on I've resolved to carry a copy of my insurance certificate with me at all times but I would be interested to read your views on this!

This often happens in the weeks after renewal. What to do is check that you are covered on www.askmid.com. If you find you are not, chase the insurers.
