Is it normal for warranty companies to prevaricate for flood-related claims?

I wonder if other readers have experience of making claims against Allianz. I have not made a claim for some 30 years and am astonished at the prevarication and delay encountered in my dealings with the claims department over a period of almost seven weeks.

On the first November my car broke down and was towed into a local garage who some days later confirmed that due to driving through water that it had suffered a hydro locking causing major damage to the engine. Allianz advised me at the time that it was damaged beyond reasonable repair and would be treated as a write off. Since that date and despite numerous phone calls and the provision of all documentation requested they have now advised that they are trying to confirm evidence of some impact damage to the front of the car. There was no impact as the car was not involved in any kind of collision. When their agents collected the car a month ago they took the car and the engine, in two parts now, but neglected to take the front of the car which had been removed to access the V8 engine. As I have said I would be interest to know whether their behaviour in dealing with my claim is normal and whether other readers have had similar experience?

Obviously the claim has passed from one person to another without proper communication between them and the person currently dealing with it sees only a car with the front removed. Clarify this with them and, if you face obfuscation, ask for the matter to be taken to the next level or you will contact the Financial Services Ombudsman. I think we will soon get to a stage where insurers refuse claims for engines wrecked from driving through floodwater as self-inflicted.
