Failed air con compressor on Volkswagen Passat

The air conditioning compressor has failed on my 2008 Volkswagen Passat 1.9 TDI, with 27,000 miles on the clock. The car has a full service history and has been well cared for. Is this a common problem, and do you think Volkswagen would make contribution to repair?

Firstly, what usually fails is the air conditioning pump clutch, which should cost no more than £100 to replace, not the pump itself. But in the UK most dealers rip the customer off by replacing the entire unit, whether the whole thing needs replacing or not.

If the fault is with the pump itself, there's no harm in asking Volkswagen, but I'll be pleasantly surprised it they cough up.
