Should we buy a Nissan X-Trail automatic?

We currently drive a Nissan X-Trail, and for the North Yorkshire Moors in winter, have found it does just what we have asked of it. We plan to replace it with another X-Trail, and have been offered an automatic. I understand that in terms of fuel economy, there is little difference between automatic and manual these days. Do you know if this is correct? In addition, can you shed any light on the comparative performance of an automatic on snow-covered hilly roads?

The X-Trail automatic is only available with the lower powered 150PS 2.0DCI engine, but in my opinion this is entirely adequate anyway. This Renault engine does not have a lot of torque low down in the rev range and an automatic transmission will help to mask the problem. Of course, the answer for winter is not four-wheel drive alone, but also cold weather 'winter' tyres.
