Do I really need to buy insurance and paint protection with my new car?

I've just bought a new Hyundai i10 Active auto for £8527. But the salesman wanted me to pay an extra £395 for glass coat paint protection and interior Scotchguard protection and also £395 guaranteed asset protection insurance. I refused to buy either of these extras.

I feel I can make up my own mind about the insurance but I really would value your opinion as to my wisdom in refusing the extra paint protection. He said all paint nowadays was water based and would be very vulnerable if I didn’t buy the extra protection.

Sadly, selling these overpriced items is the only way hard-pressed car salesmen can make any commission these days. Spend £45 on a tub of Autoglym High Def wax (yes, it's that expensive) and one coat will last up to nine months. The tub should be good for four or five applications on a car of this size.
