What do you think of the Subaru Forester for rural winter use?

We are looking for a new car and, living in a very rural location, we want a 4x4 but do not want a Land Rover type. We have seen a couple of secondhand 2004/2005 Subaru Forester 2.5XT Turbos for sale locally which appeal to us. I realise that these are not the most economical of vehicles to run but its primary use would be for short journeys in the winter months. Given your recent articles on the benefits of winter tyres the Forester has 16-inch wheels that presumably would readily accept a winter tyre. Does this seem a sensible idea? Are there any reliability or other issues with the 2.5T engine?

They are good cars, well liked by owners. See: www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/subaru/forester-2008/ And: www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/subaru/forester-2002/

Yes, cold weather ‘winter’ tyres or all-weather tyres are still a good idea in winter, even with four wheel drive.
