Can I hire a car with a paper driving licence only?

Towards the end of next month I am going to Italy and may need to hire a car. I only hold a paper version of my driving licence as the need has not arisen yet for me to apply for the photocard version. Is the document I hold sufficient for me to hire a car? I am also 66 years of age. Will this present an issue?

If I were you I'd apply online for a photocard driving licence which can be issued using your biometric photo held by the Passport Office. You’ll have to change it again at the age of 70. Your old paper licence is still legal, but the people working for the car rental company might not think it is so my suggestion will avoid any difficulty. See: www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/Need.../

Hiring a car up to the age of 70 is not a problem. Over 70 it can be. Be very aware that any motoring offence in Italy could follow you home as much as 18 months later.
