Are radial tyres suitable for use in summer and winter, instead of swapping to winter tyres?

I lived in Canada for nine years in the late seventies to early eighties. At that time we were always told you could avoid switching tyres every winter by using radials. Radials were sufficient for summer and winter. I am surprised they have not been mentioned in the letters about winter tyres. We never used winter tyres - and believe me we did get a fair bit of snow and ice in Ontario.

Though a new idea in the 1960s, all car tyres are now radial ply construction and have been for at least 20 years. But tyres used to have greater rubber content v/s silica and that's why they were softer and better in winter.
