If a car is written off in its first policy year, does the driver have to start the insurance process again?

I was somewhat perturbed by your comments in last Saturday's DT in response to a reader who had taken out a new policy with his former insurer. If what you say is true: that a car written off in its first policy year results in starting again, how are we to ever change insurers to reduce our premiums? Or am I missing something?

I was simply stating the fact that this is how some insurers treat a write off in the first year of the policy.
