Should I buy a set of steel wheels for my Skoda Octavia Scout when I fit winter tyres?
I have a 2008 Skoda Octavia Scout, 66,000 miles. It is almost ready for a complete tyre change and I am considering fitting winter tyres until March and then replacing them with a new set of standard tyres. I spoke to ATS about getting a set of steel wheels for the winter tyres but was told that it wasn't necessary providing they were fitted by a specialist tyre company. I appreciate that they will benefit by the charge for fitting twice a year but wonder if there is any detriment in removing and refitting. I anticipate keeping the car until Spring 2014.

Alloys are more likely to get damaged by road salt and grit in the winter, then require refurbishment. Steel wheels are also stronger. And, of course, tyres already on wheels are much easier to swap every autumn and spring. But if you swap to steel wheels you have to disclose the ‘modification’ to your insurer.
