Should I fit winter tyres to all four wheels of my Alfa Giulietta?

After 40 years of fitting winter tyres (starting with Town & Country) to the driving wheels of my vehicle I now find tyre retailers insisting that this is "unsafe" and wanting to fit four. Having had no problems in the past, I would be interested in your view as to whether this is an attempt by retailers to cash in on the hysteria generated by the inch or two of snow in the last two years. Whilst I appreciate four must be better than driving wheels only, is there anything inherently different to modern cars? I currently drive an Alfa Guilietta with all-weather mode "DNA".

Absolutely right. Cars and tyres are now much more sophisticated than 40 years ago so if you fit winters to only the front you will find the car wanting to swap ends, especially down a slippery hill. There is a Michelin film illustrating this at www.tyrereviews.co.uk
