Can I change my insurance company every year to obtain the best quote?

Are there any drawbacks in changing your car insurer every year to get the cheapest quote?

With some insurers, if you have a crash that writes off the car during the first year of a new policy, the payoff may terminate the policy completely. So when you replace the car you have to start from scratch with a new policy. To give an example, if you write the car off four months into a 12-month term, you are not automatically credited with the remaining eight months' insurance when you get another car. Check with your insurer. Some do this. Some don't.
