Why are some insurance companies excluding cover for old age?

I thought other readers might be interested to know of my car insurance experience today and wonder how widespread this attitude is. I am a fit 81-year-old, satisfied all the preliminary questions regarding any history of driving convictions, accidents, etc, and drive a standard, unmodified Toyota Corolla Verso T3 - but was refused cover by Direct Line because of my age. On further questioning I would be covered for a smaller car like a Ford Fiesta.

This is typical of Direct Line's simplistically restrictive systems. By far the best insurer currently is LV (formerly Liverpool Victoria).
