Is tyre sealant any good?

Many thanks for your great advice 8 years ago when I bought a BMW 330d Msport touring, which was to change to 17-inch alloys, remove the swirl flaps, change engine oil every 10K and change the autobox oil at Insp2 - run turbos to cool etc, etc. Its' never missed a beat over 100K miles.

Now I have a 2012 335D M Sport touring with 18-inch run flats and I am changing to 17-inch non run flats.

There's no spare nor storage. Do tyre sealants work? If so, which would you recommend? Use as a preventative or when needed?

Motorcyclists and caravanners swear by them, and so does Ford, which uses sealants rather than runflat tyres.
