Goodwill from Volkswagen for my dodgy dials?

I have a problem with the dashboard electrics. The lights flash on and off regardless of whether the car is running or not and the rev counter and speedo have completely failed.

I bought the car in September 2009 new it has done 26,000 miles and is now three months out of warranty. Volkswagen says I have to cover the cost of repairs.

Can I claim under the Sale of Goods Act that it is not fit for purpose or under the durability clause?

Never heard of such a claim against the manufacturer succeeding.
