Buying a new car, what Audi would you recommend

I currently drive a P-registered Volkswagen Golf 1.6CL, and my husband has a 2.5-litre 2001 BMW 3-Series compact. We are looking for a single replacement for both cars, and currently considering a used Audi A3 5door.

My daily commute is 3 miles but we also want a car that will be comfortable for motorway driving in England and France. I have thought about the slightly older 1.6 FSI with 116bhp rather than the later 1.6 with only 102bhp.

We have around £10,000 to spend, but could stretch a bit for the right car. Are there any other options we could consider? We need five-seats and four-doors, as we often take grandchildren out.

An A3 1.6FSI is not "the right car" unless you want to spend £2,000 of your £10,000 on perceived status. The A3 needs to have the 1.8TSI or 2.0TSI engine, or, for £2000-£3000 less, get an equivalent Golf or SEAT Leon.
