Buying an old diesel

I only have a grand to spend. Is it worth buying a diesel, eg fiesta, with 100000 on the clock and for sale, privately for £900? I want a car that is cheap to run.

I do about 12000-15000 miles a year. I drive a 1997 forester at the moment but it isn't that economical and although it's a great car I need something easier on fuel and cheaper on road tax.

A very old diesel makes more sense than a newer one because it is less complex with less parts to go wrong. But a 100k miler could still be knackered. Check all the obvious things in www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/
