Outstanding finance problem

Got a 2006 Vauxhall Corsa C on Finance from Evans Halshaw and through Black Horse, I was 18 just passed my test and wanted a good first car, was willing to pay the £147 a month they wanted, had no problems.

Within a week had problems, went back to Evans Halshaw who fobbed me off, said to contact Black Horse, I did so and they fobbed me back off to Evans Halshaw.

Don't have any proof of this as it was all on the telephone. Eventually car broke completely, I'd hardly used it and didn't race etc like most normal teenagers, all I wanted was a nice car to get me from work to home and anywhere else I went without any worries.

Anyway, I stopped paying the finance and rang the company saying I wanted the car collected as it was broken and I was refusing to pay anymore as neither Black Horse nor Evans Halshaw wanted to help me or have anything to do with me.

Three months later Black Horse came and collected said car then sent me a letter saying I owed them £4500, which I don't understand as the car was up for £4999 and I paid the finance for roughly 6 months which would make it less than £4500.

They have now sold said debt to Lewis Debt Group who are very unhelpful and demanding, I have said I would pay a certain amount a month back and have this in written evidence to which they did not respond. They have now got in touch with a solicitor Howard Cohen & Co demanding my current expenditure. I have sent that off to prove the amount I offered is all I can afford and have had no response.

To be honest I think I'm being ripped off somewhere as I was 18 and rushed into things. As stated I was never bothered about having to pay money, I was always willing to but now they're demanding and I'm offering as much as possible and they wont accept.

I'm 20 and have realized I need to clear this debt if I want to live a decent lifestyle so would like any advice etc on sorting this out.

You cannot legally stop paying finance. Now you need a specialist solicitor, urgently. You will have to countersue both the finance house and the dealer for supplying a car that was "not of satisfactory quality". Happily, £4,999 is (just) under the small claims track of the county court limit.
