Is the Dacia 1.2 engine reliable?
I'm considering buying a new Bigster with the 1.2 engine. It seems this is the same Renault/Nissan/Dacia engine that had a well documented history of issues at least prior to 2016. I'm having trouble finding any recent info regarding its reliability since. Is it now finally a half decent engine or would the new, unproven and more expensive hybrid be a more sensible option?

The Dacia Bigster and other models in the Dacia and Renault family use the HR12DDV engine, which is a newer design compared to the previous HR12DE unit. Because there are fewer examples and it has been in production for a shorter period there is less data available in terms of its reliability. However, it uses a timing chain rather than a belt, and evidence suggests that if maintained well with the correct fluids and servicing carried out on or before the recommended service intervals it should prove to be more reliable than older versions of the 1.2-litre unit.
