What's the cause of an anti pollution system fault on my diesel?

I have a Peugeot 308 1.6 HDi 2011 with 150000 miles. I started having anti pollution problems around Christmas. Mechanic hooked the car up to the error reader which said there was an injector problem and I had them replaced. However, after a month the error message started again intermittently until yesterday that the car went into limp mode three times.

Problem generally happens when the motor is hot, 20 miles plus into motorway driving, and especially once I leave the motorway and am driving slower through villages. Also, an incline seems to hasten the warning. Motor is not rough but this morning it did show power loss in town driving. Having spent money on the injectors, more dpf fluid etc and not seeing results, I'm quite worried.

On many Peugeot vehicles the anti-pollution system warning is displayed when there is a general fault within the engine, and while the DPF may be a possible cause it is also a possibility that it is elsewhere within the engine. A fault code with the injectors may well have been a symptom of the fault rather than the cause - if the engine is over or under-fuelling or the air to fuel ratio is incorrect then injectors can suffer, which may have been the cause of the fault code.

One possible cause is the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve (EGR) as this mixes some of the exhaust gases back into the engine's air intake, and if this is blocked or failing to open or close correctly it can mean an incorrect air to fuel ratio which could cause the warning. It is also possible that the DPF is partially blocked, and if this is the case it can cause excessive backpressure through the exhaust and is more likely to cause problems when the vehicle is hot.

If you are hesitant about returning to the same garage you may wish to look for an independent Peugeot or PSA specialist in your area who will have more experience of these faults and hopefully be able to offer a correct diagnosis.
