For a budget of £5000 that needs to comfortably transport three adults while remaining cheap to run and highly reliable, you should look at a mid-sized hatchback.
The Honda Civic (2006–2011 or early 2012 models) is highly recommended, as it is incredibly reliable, features a spacious cabin with plenty of rear legroom for adults, and has Magic Seats for excellent practicality. Another superb option is the Skoda Octavia, which offers massive interior space, Volkswagen-group mechanicals, and low running costs. If you want something slightly smaller but still spacious enough for three, a Toyota Auris or a petrol Ford Focus with a manual gearbox will serve you well. Stick to petrol engines unless you are doing significant motorway mileage, as older diesels at this price point can come with expensive turbo or particulate filter issues.
Because used car prices remain inflated, the best and safest place to purchase at this budget is from an established independent used car dealer that provides a warranty, or by using reputable online classified sites like AutoTrader to filter for highly rated local trade sellers. Buying from a dealer gives you essential legal protection under the Consumer Rights Act if the car develops a major fault shortly after purchase. Make sure to buy based entirely on a clean, comprehensive service history rather than age or mileage, and always check the car's MoT history online for free before viewing it to spot any recurring mechanical red flags.
