The timing chain snapped on my car but dealer has had it for four months - what can I do?
I have a Vauxhall Combo Life. I noticed a recall on the car for a timing chain issue last year. The test to check the chain was carried out by a Vauxhall dealership and given the all clear. A little while later, the chain snapped while my wife was coming off the M4 during rush hour. This was December 18th. I had the car recovered to the dealership on the 31st of December, and it has been there ever since.
The dealership has proven that the chain has snapped and keeps getting asked for more information from the warranty firm. The head is off and in the boot and I believe the latest request is for the dealership to take the engine completely apart.
The dealership has 10 Vauxhall vans awaiting fixes, and I believe most of these are for snapped chains.
I have tried to contact Vauxhall customer services 4 times by email and have not even had a reply.
I have now had to get another car, whilst still paying for the loan on the Combo Life, which is a stretch. I could not use the Combo as a trade-in as it is currently classed as scrap, a 69 plate car with 48000 on the clock.
I need to get this issue resolved, but I am unsure who to complain to. Could you please give me any suggestions?

This is a frustrating situation for many reasons, particularly as the chain was checked and passed as OK and that the vehicle has been with the dealer for such a long period of time. We would suggest escalating your complaint by sending a letter by recorded post marked as 'letter before action' indicating that this is a final attempt to achieve a resolution before you take legal action. Give the timeline of events, the potentially dangerous situation that your wife experienced and the fact that the vehicle was given an all-clear by the dealer, and under these circumstances you require either a replacement engine free of charge or that the vehicle is bought back from you at its market value before the failure occurred. We would also suggest giving them a time limit of 14-28 days to respond before you take legal action.
If the vehicle is still under finance you can contact the finance provider and explain that you are rejecting the car as unfit for purpose and that the dealer is failing to repair it in a reasonable timeframe. You can also explain that you are experiencing financial hardship as a result of not having access to the car for an extended period of time.
