Do PHEVs operate the same way as regular hybrids?

My Kia Niro Hybrid returns around 60mpg. Most of my journeys exceed the battery range of a PHEV version. Does a PHEV operate in the same way as my standard hybrid once the electric only range is passed i.e. the battery charges up and it then runs on EV for sometimes quite long periods just as if it was a standard hybrid?

Yes this is correct - PHEVs operate the same way as regular hybrids when the battery has been depleted, mixing ICE and battery power depending on the state of charge, the mode you select and driving conditions. PHEVs have the advantage of allowing plug-in charging, so if you make frequent short journeys you can charge the battery at home or a public charging facility and potentially save money by driving more frequently in EV mode.
