Should I carry my driving licence at all times?

I was stopped by the police yesterday, who took exception to the fact that I didn't have my driving licence on me. I'd always understood that you could present it to a police station within seven days if you didn't have it on you, and as I'd been to the gym, I wasn't carrying my wallet as it's just something to look after. I had no ID on me at all - just my phone and keys. Thankfully they let it go, but it made me question this - they quoted a piece of law that "said" I had to have my licence on me at all times, which is not what I understood.

There is no obligation to carry your driving licence on you at all times, you are only obliged to show your licence if a police officer asks you to do so. If you do not have it on you, you have seven days to produce your licence at a police station.
