Honda C-RV air con intermittent, does it need recharging?

My wife’s 2008 Honda C-RV has been an excellent car. As you always advise, the air con is kept on all the time. Recently I’ve noticed that when set to “LO”, the air from the vents is cool but not really cold for the first five minutes or so, but then turns cold as it should. Could this indicate the need to recharge the system? I don’t believe it has ever been recharged so 14 years without recharging is pretty impressive.

It's possible there is a refrigerant gas leak somewhere in the system after 14 years. Or it may simply be a dirty air filter or condenser. The fact it operates as it should after a few minutes would suggest it isn't a serious fault, but I'd recommend getting it checked by an independent automotive AC specialist.

The fact you keep the AC on all of the time is key to the long life of your car's air conditioning system.

A trusted AC specialist says I need a new condenser for my air conditioning unit and has quoted £400 for a replacement, with three hours needed to fit — including a re-gas. Is this a fair price?
Does my air con unit need gas and, if so, where does it go? It doesn't seem to be very good at the moment.
