Nicked and tucked

I don’t know if you can advise me here or just warn others about this. On 14th August this year I hired a car in Glasgow airport for a one-way trip to Reading. I was quoted £84, which included the one-way premium. When I picked up the car It was pouring with rain and the only damage spotted was a scuff to the N/S/R wheelarch and bumper that was marked on the invoice. I also paid £35 for the full tank of fuel so I need not worry about returning it full. I drove the car to Reading and dropped it off the following morning where it was checked and signed off hire to me. All good and to plan. Checking my bank account a few days later I noticed that the rental company had taken £268.78 out of my account on the 14th August. I phoned to complain and was told that the car was damaged on return. I explained that no damage was pointed out to me and was told they would look into it. After hearing nothing for a few days I called again to be told that the matter was now not a branch matter but a repair centre one. I called the repair centre to be told that it was indeed being repaired as there was a scuff to the N/S/R wing and bumper. When I explained that this was pre-hire damage I was told that someone would contact me about it. On hearing nothing again I e-mailed Enterprise at their helpdesk and got a reply saying it was a branch issue. To top it all I have just checked my bank only to discover a FURTHER withdrawal of £219.55 on the 28th August.
Are they legally allowed to take money from me without my consent or notifying me as If I had not checked my account As far as I was aware I faced a bill of £119 not £488.33 so would be none the wiser as I have had no correspondence from the rental company at all.
