I ordered a Volvo C30 1.6d DRIVe ‘S’ without the start stop option because, living in a rural area, I thought that the £250 option would be of little benefit to me. Two weeks after I had ordered and following some internet research I discovered that the DRIVe model now did not have the rear spoiler, unique rear bumper with diffuser or aerodynamic underbody panels, all added to the vehicle to bring its drag co-efficient down to 28, not to mention the attractive look these gave to the rear of the car.

I checked with Volvo and the explanation is: “2009MY DRIVe cars @119g/km had body styling as standard. With 2010MY, customers have the choice of a DRIVe with Start / stop and all of the styling @104g/km or a 'standard' C30 DRIVe without the additional styling @119g/km. The 'benefit' that the styling created in the MY09 is made up for in engine enhancements in the MY10.” Volvo continues, “ we've been very clear with the dealer network from the outset of the benefits of both cars because we saw this as a potential problem. Coincidentally, we reinforced this with a communication to dealers in the last 24 hours. So, your customer has got the right CO2 that he thinks he should but it's just a question of whether it should have styling or not, based on the historical precedent that it does.”
