Insighting a conflict

I live in Portugal and have a 1997 Mercedes C180 Classic estate, petrol 1,800cc. It's done around 350,000km and the Mercedes dealership had fitted a new engine and suspension at 260,000km. It suits our purposes and is fairly economical, around 38mpg. I have read your car-by-car breakdown and noted the ECU has a tendency to fail after about 12years, so I'm starting to look around for a replacement before that happens and the cars value goes down the pan. As you know the price of cars here are way above the UK prices and a Ford Focus Econetic is about 26,500 euros. I read your review of the Honda Insight and it seems to suit our purpose. The price here of the base model is 19,500 euros, and seems a "bargain", if there is such a thing in Portugal. My query is, the CVT transmission. Is it durable and reliable? How long would you expect the belts to last and are they replaceable or is it a new 'gearbox' at whatever cost. Reading your test report, my driving habits etc are similar to yours. My shit or bust days are gone, but 'What Car' says you need a calendar to overtake especially on motorways. Most of our motoring is on empty rural roads in the interior of Portugal but a bit of acceleration would be handy to get around the occasional petrol tanker etc. Your comments would be appreciated

Honda has been using CVTs in the Fit/Jazz from 2002 to 2008 and these have been as reliable if not more so than any other automatic transmission. The Prius is also fitted with a CVT and I have never heard of any problems with them. We tested it in Spain inland of Valencia on roads very similar to Portugal's. Obviously whenever you use hard acceleration you lose the economy benefit. But we drove at a reasonable pace and still achieved the maximum level of pot plants in the dash indicator. About 55mpg.
