Photocard finisher

My wife's driving license shows the date 23-04-09 under item 4b. However the counterpart says it is valid until a later date and it also shows that same date under item 11 on the back of the photo license. I have tried making sense of the DVLA and Directgov web sites but neither throw any light on the matter. Could you explain for us and possibly many others, which is the correct date?

That will be the date for renewal of the photocard, because by then the photo will no longer be a true likeness of her, having aged 10 years.
