Wandering car

We want a selectable 4x4 (auto preferably) that is about 2 or 3 years old with excellent reliability and economy (which presumably means diesel, although we have been unlucky with auto diesel gearboxes). The off road use will be two 65 year olds exploring European backwoods countryside rather than serious Land Rover territory. We would appreciate your opinion on the best couple of cars to look at.

Very few economical automatic diesel 4x4s. Probably the closest is a Nissan Qashqai 2.0DCI auto from which we got 41.2mpg on a brief test round the same route as a petrol and a diesel 2WD manual. Or maybe a Freelander II 2.2 diesel auto with stop-start, but I can't tell you what that will do to the gallon in real life.
