SORN again

Towards the end of February I renewed the VED online for two of my cars and declared my 1967 MGB as SORN as its MOT had expired. The DVLA website enabled me to print out clear receipts for the vehicles I had re-taxed, but for my SORN declaration I could only print the screen as proof, which crucially did not specify the vehicle registration, only that I had declared something as SORN. To be certain that my declaration had been accepted I rang the DVLA the following day and I was told that it had gone through I that I would receive confirmation within two weeks. After the two weeks was up I had received no letter so I rang the DVLA again to be told that they had no record of my SORN. Fortunately I was able to make the declaration again and avoid an automatic fine. As a member of the MG Owners' Club I am aware that there have been cases of SORN declarations going 'missing' and fines being issued, and anyone using the online service should be careful to avoid being caught out.

You don't have to tell me about the DVLA penalising car keepers for its own incompetence. But people do need to be reminded to do the sensible thing you did and avoid any unpleasantness before it starts.
