Great space - Quality not up to VW reputation

This is the second 7 seat 1.9 Tdi (105 hp) we've had, the first did about 50,000 mls. and we part ex'd it for the newer model. We did have concerns for the clutch on the last one as it had towed a caravan extensively (to Spain) but it did not give any problems. The only major fault developed after part exchange when the dealer informed us the ABS light had come on and cost about £1,500 to fix apparently. They were satisfied though it was nothing to do with us. We do still worry whether the well known clutch or ABS problems will bite us during ownership. Bear in mind they don't come with a spare tyre. We travel long distance so have one loose in the back but that's not ideal nor particularly safe in an accident

The newer version is quite simply not as good! The accountants have been at work. Examples include the springs to return the load securing rings to flush are missing (that must have saved 50p a car) and the aluminium heat shield between the exhaust and car floor and the cars jack have gone. The wipers used to wipe to the centre from both sides clearing most of the screen but now are traditional one directional leaving the passenger with a poorer view.

We have had an irritating recurring fault with a plastic box on the dashboard, replaced under warranty after about 6 months, failed again JUST outside warranty. Maintenance seems quite expensive but not as bad as their Audi brothers!

Good comfort, ride and space. Car travels to Spain every year (now without caravan) and is OK for long journeys. Practical but not inspired. Often think it could do with a higher gear ratio as revs quite high at 70 making me check it's in 6th not 4th.
