    Nor are the allowances necessarily the prices quoted in Glass's Guide or CAP, and certainly not the sort of prices at which cars can sometimes be bought at auction, but they are close enough to give the public a good and fair guide as to where they stand with a dealer. For example, Value My Car values a 98R Ford Mondeo 2.0iLX with 36,000 miles at £5,080 in excellent condition; £4,840 in average condition and £4,550 in poor condition. The March 2001 issue of Glasses Guide gives a trade value of £4,975 for the same car in good conditon with full service history.

    Berlingo Multispace 1.4s start at £8,495, the previous offer price, but the 1.8i and 1.9D are each reduced by £1,000 to £8,895 and £8,750 represent tremendous value for money. 2001 modelyear Xsaras are down by as much as £1,500, bringing the best selling 1.6iLX 5-door down to £10,195, some £1,800 less than the equivalent Ford Focus. The Picasso 2.0HDi now works out at a very reasonable £12,995, and the 1.6iLX at £11,995, though independents have offered the 1.6iLX for as little as £9,000. The soon to be replaced Xantia now starts at £10,995 for the 1.8i 16v Forte, and seven seater Synergies at £16,170.

    Much of the running gear was common to other models, including the chassis which was essentially carried over from the preceding Type 38. The Type 44's 2991cc eight-cylinder 80bhp engine was based around two cast-iron cylinder blocks (complete with non-detachable heads) and boasted a centrally-driven single overhead camshaft that operated twenty-four valves (sixteen inlet, eight exhaust).

And a 1993 Porsche 911 Carrera RS fetched £716,800 – setting yet another auction benchmark for the model.

    Now here’s a hell of a lot of car for the money. Launched in 1993 as a runout model for the final two years of XJ40 production, the S, or Sport, was designed to appeal to a younger demographic, ahead of the upcoming X300, which would have a Sport model as part of the standard line-up. Indeed, the Sport was very much a precursor for the X300.

    By the time the SD1 entered production in Britain in 1976, Standard was obviously long dead as a marque, while both Triumph and Rover found themselves part of the mighty British Leyland. Towards the end of the SD1’s life, however, a deal was struck for Standard Motor Products of India to buy all production rights and tooling for the Rover. Indian-built Standard 2000s began rolling off the Madras-based production line from 1985.

    Giugiaro was careful to ensure that it featured prominent ‘haunches’, a design signature that was consistent on all post-war Jaguars, barring the XJ-S. Inside, too, there was enough wood and leather to satisfy the most plutocratic owner/driver, but it was presented in a much more contemporary style. Of course, the quad-headlamps were dropped, and that would have been controversial back in the 1990s – but again, as the XF and XJ have proved, it’s possible for a Jaguar to do without this feature.

  • Toyota seeks its oldest British-built car 22 Oct 2012 (News)
    .  If you own a K-reg Carina E you can check if it is a British-built model or one of a few imported from Japan by looking at the the VIN plate, which is located under the bonnet near the windscreen wiper. If the code starts with S it’s a British-built car, while J indicates a Japanese one. Owners of the oldest examples will be invited to tell the car’s story and have it photographed. They will also be in with the chance of winning a week with the all-new upcoming Auris, which was first shown at this year's Paris Motor Show.
  • New A6 Allroad arrives in the UK 16 Jan 2012 (News)
    The entry-level version averages a claimed 46.3mpg with 159g/km of CO2. All three engines are paired with the seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission which is available with optional paddles on the steering wheel. The quattro permanent four-wheel drive system also gets torque vectoring. During dynamic driving this system brakes the wheels on the inside of a bend, before they start to skid, to enhance traction and handling.
