  • Supermarket Fuel - Quality? 25 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I have read recently that certain BMW engines (manufactured in the 90's) were the subject of a recall to prevent possible damage due to high sulphur content 'mainly in low quality supermarket unleaded' Is supermarket fuel really any different in quality to branded fuel - I do recall hearing this claim many years ago when the supermarkets started selling fuel and were undercutting local garages but is this still the case.
  • Heavy Heavy (Supermarket) Fuel 8 Jan 2004 (Forum)
HJ, You have talked often about fuel quality, and especially supermarket grades. Can you tell me whether when I see an Esso lorry pulling up at Asda's filling stations, and Texaco at Morrison's supermarket filling stations, are they delivering the same grade of fuel as that delivered to their own filling stations, or do the supermarkets buy an inferior grade?
  • Between Branded and supermarket fuel 10 Jul 2008 (Forum)
I think everybody knows that supermarkets like Morrison's, Tesco etc fuel is cheaper than branded name like Shell and BP. Somehow I have the feeling based on unverified experience that supermarket fuel is less efficient in terms of mile per gallon it covers.
  • Supermarket Fuel Suppliers 22 May 2011 (Forum)
Who exactly supplies the supermarkets with their fuel? I am particularly interested in suppliers for: Tesco Sainsburys Asda Morrisons Do thay have contracts or do they spot buy from the cheapest supplier at the time?
  • Supermarket Petrol - Good as branded? 26 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Hi, Is the petrol sold at supermarkets the same quality as branded fuels? Several years ago rumours circulated that supermarket fuel was inferior to that sold by the oil giants, BP, Esso, Shell, etc.. Any one have any thoughts on this?
  • Bad Supermarket Fuel? 3 Jun 2012 (Forum)
Heard and read that there is bad/dirty fuel being sold at supermarket garages and causing all sorts of problems, i filled up this week and the engine warning light came on after and stayed on for 2 days. read tanks having to be empied and new fuel filters fitted and on some cars whole fuel systems being bled and flushed any one else had a problem?
  • hyundai i40 - supermarket fuel VS branded long term test review 17 Mar 2016 (Forum)
this could probably be the most extensive test on the difference of supermarket fuel Vs branded. I wanted to see if I was paying over the auds using bp ultimate or if I could get the same results for 10p cheaper. I filled up with supermarket fuel, let it go to half a tank, filled up again and re-set my ecu.

Bit late but the truth is there The fact that the stuff is sold in litres and not gallons is the biggest con Supermarkets and fuel retailers pushing diesel and petrol prices higher than needed, competition watchdog finds (msn.com)
  • Supermarket petrol - any difference? 23 Dec 2005 (Forum)
After reading the papers and seeing interviews on the TV about the fire at the Buncefield fuel depot, it was said that tankers from Tesco, BP and Total were all lined up for filling along side each other to fill up from the same fuel line. This suggests to me that the petrol quality from supermarkets is the same as those from major suppliers, as they seem to get the fuel from exactly the same source.
  • Update on Supermarket fuel 22 May 2006 (Forum)
My son in law is back driving Texaco fuel tankers on nights after two years on car transporters. I asked him recently if Supermarkets had additives put in their fuel. His first response was no, they didn?t the last time he was working on tankers .
  • Supermarket vs big name fuel. 27 Aug 2006 (Forum)
I can't find a search option on this forum, which is a bit sad. Anyway, there's a good discussion going on at the moneysavingexpert forums about supermarket vs big name fuel. My personal belief is that big name fuel gives me slightly more mpg. Years ago I had a crappy 1.1 Escort which would pink at the slighest excuse as I attempted to wring every last one of its 60BHP out it.
  • Supermarket fuel Vs branded fuel 13 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Hi All I have here a debate for you all, After speaking to a friend of mine the other day he informed me that he won't go near supermarket fuel as he says it is made form bio fuel and is of a lower grade and therefore says it is bad for your car, I however regularly fill up at the local superamarket as it is convenient and have always thought that it is the same fuel as is sold everywhere, but it has got me thinking, is there any truth in what he is saying?
  • - Supermarket Fuel Telegraph Cars Section Today 2 Jul 2015 (Forum)
Writing in todays motoring section Alex Robbins says there is no empirical evidence to show that Supermarket fuel is inferior. But a local company that manufactures Spectroscopy equipment have told me that when used to check fuels, the supermarket diesel was found to have less additives. And therefore inferior.
  • Morrisons supermarkets and fuel price increases. 13 Jan 2008 (Forum)
It is just one supermarket chain in my area: MORRISON'S. This one supermarket has had and caused all the other providers in my area to have three price increases on all types of fuel in the last month. Morrison's always seem to be the one that has pump price increases first.
  • Supermarket Fuel 30 Nov 2007 (Forum)
There are 3 diesels in the family - and all of us have nnoticed that when we use supermarket fuel (especially Tesco) we get 3 to 5 mpg LESS than we do when we fill up with Shell. Fortunately, our Shell garage sells at the same price (sometimes cheaper - even with Tesco 5p off a litre) than the local Tesco and Morrisons, but I've tended to use Tesco simply to get Clubcard points.

  • Fuel rip off - PEG 8 Dec 2011 (Forum)
I've noticed an increase in the lowest & highest price per litre between filling stations within any given area, anything from 1-5p lt and the most expensive being the major oil companies. I recon they should be able to under cut supermarkets but instead charge more. As they produce, refine, wholesale and retail and in so doing make a profit at each stage. The supermarkets buy their fuel on the spot market a product of the majors and then retail it less than the majors who will only relax their price when they are too near an aggresive supermarket.

  • All - New Fuel 3 Sep 2021 (Forum)
Hello One and all,   I went into a supermarket for a well known supermarket, as I go in there every day to fill up before parking the truck ..    I asked how much they will be selling the new fuel for. I was told £1.40 per litre,  £6.36 per gallion.
  • Supermarket fuel 15 Jun 2001 (Forum)
Is supermarket fuel truly any worse than the named brands? Given that it sells at the same price (remember the days when it was a bargain?) can we not believe that it is just the same? I ran my car solely on Tesco's for 1K miles, then 1K miles on Texaco only, and discerned no difference in peformance and 0.2 mpg on fuel economy (which may have been down to mix of driving).
